THE UNKNOWNS

Here are a number of pieces for which we have yet to discover their artists' identities.

[artist unknown], I AIM AT THE STARS, (FOUR COLOR # 1148) - "The Werner Von Braun Story - The big-as-space drama of the satellite launchings . . . and how Werner Von Braun is turning science-fiction into reality !" -   This story was a comic adaptation of the film of the same name.

[artist unknown], FLATTOP VS DIRIGIBLE, (MAN'S LIFE 1964-Nov) - "Flattop vs. Dirigible--Combat saga of Lt. Joe Hamilton--Yank who spearheaded the world's first carrier raid // See thru cameras...bedroom bugs...telephone taps--Those Cheap, Easy To Get 'Snoop' Gadgets That Give Sex Kicks To Neighborhood Sneaks // Hotter than tomorrow's headlines--Exclusive! Never before told!--The Day We Blasted Red China's A-Bomb Plant // In Color--Manja Peterson In The Flesh // 6 Ways Today's Married Heels Get Away With Wife Cheating"

[artist unknown], THE THRILL SET, (MOD WHEELS # 12) - "Introducing those daredevil drivers-The Thrill Set!-Wheels crashes their act and their nerves !" - This original painting came on the market recently and the auction-house wanted to attribute it to George Wilson, but I can't agree.

[artist unknown], GIL THORP, (GIL THORPE # 1) - "With the new baseball season, a serious problem arises for coach Thorp !" - The only issue, provding more adventures for Jack Berrill;s newspaper-strip sports-coach hero.

[artist unknown], MAN IN SPACE, (FOUR COLOR # 716) - "One of man's oldest dreams has been the desire to travel through space to other worlds . . ."

[artist unknown], MAN IN SPACE - SATELLITES, (FOUR COLOR # 954) - "Explorer !  Vanguard !  Sputnik !  What are they - and WHY have they been rocketed into space ?  This is their story . . ."

[artist unknown], AMERICA AT SEA, (AMERICA IN ACTION # 1 (back cover)) - A painting from the back cover of this comic, with no 'trade dress' whatsoever.

[artist unknown], [title unknown], (M.G.M.'s LASSIE # 2 (back cover)) - One wonders if this is a Morris (Mo) Gollub piece seeing how he did so many of the covers (and back covers) of this series.  Admittedly, it seems a bit tame and somewhat indistinct for his work, but it is an early effort here.

[artist unknown], THE ADVENTURES OF TOM SAWYER, (DELL JUNIOR TREASURY # 10)

[artist unknown], EARTH FROM SPACE, (in SPACE WARS-FACT AND FICTION) - The original painting was utilized as the contents-page of this book.  I suspect the versions I'm seeing circulating around the interweb have been 'doctored' to fill-in the starfield (the frequent presence of 10-or-so duplicate Big Dipper constellations hints at that).

[artist unknown], I THOUGHT OF DAISY - "The story of a young man, a poetess of genius, and the unforgettable chorus girl from Pittsburgh." - Avon's paperback release of Edmund Wilson's novel.

[artist], TREVAYNE - Dell's paperback release of the political thriller by 'Jonathan Ryder' (Robert Ludlum).

[artist unknown], THE ADVENTURES OF TOM SAWYER, (CLASSICS ILLUSTRATED # 50) - A comic adaptation of this tale by 'Mark Twain' (Samuel Clemens).

[artist unknown], OM HAVET [THE SEA], (ALT I BILDER [All In Pictures] # 28) - ILLUSTRERTE KLASSIKERE was the Norwegian comic-line providing those translations of the American publisher Gilberton's CLASSICS ILLUSTRATED.  In the same fashion, ALT I BILDER mirrored Gilberton's THE WORLD AROUND US.  Understand that these foreign publishers would create their own original books within these comic-lines.  This book was an example of such.

[artist unknown], ADVENTURES OF CELLINI, (CLASSICS ILLUSTRATED # 38) - A comic adaptation of the autobiography of goldsmith, sculptor & author, Benvenuto Cellini.

[artist unknown], IN THE REIGN OF TERROR, (CLASSICS ILLUSTRATED # 139) - A comic adaptation of this historical French Revolution tale by G.A. Henty.

[artist unknown], MOBY DICK, (CLASSICS ILLUSTRATED # 5) - A comic adaptation of this novel by Herman Melville.

[artist unknown], THE ILLUSTRATED STORY OF RAILROADS, (THE WORLD AROUND US # 4) Another release in this educational series from the same folks behind Classics Illustrated.

[artist unknown], THE FORTY-FIVE GUARDSMEN, (CLASSICS ILLUSTRATED # 113) - A comic adaptation of this novel by Alexandre Dumas(père) & Auguste Marquet,  I can't see it, but commentators with better eyes than me say an indeterminate signature can be made out that appears to them as "C--- M---".

[artist unknown], FANG AND CLAW, (CLASSICS ILLUSTRATED # 123) - A comic adaptation of this collection of wildlife anecdotes by Frank Buck.

[artist unknown], RIVER FEUD, (FOUR COLOR # 484) - "A picturized edition of 'Rouge River Feud'" - Comic adaptation of the Zane Grey story also known as 'Rustlers of Silver River'.

[artist unknown], BEAR COUNTRY, (FOUR COLOR # 758) - "A wild and rugged land, but a realm of easy living for Nature's seemingly favored creature, the great bear . . ." - An educational nature book associated with the Walt Disney company, who was producing such live-action nature features at the time. - I've seen it suggested that Taylor Oughton was the painter.

[artist unknown], PEARL HARBOR, (COMBAT # 2) - "The Japanese lost 28 planes . . . the U.S. half its Pacific Fleet. It all took place in 120 minutes."

[artist unknown], MOSES AND THE TEN COMMANDMENTS, (MOSES AND THE TEN COMMANDMENTS # 1) - The blockbuster film had been released the previous year.

[artist unknown], [title unknown], (TARZAN'S JUNGLE ANNUAL # 6) - Sam Savitt has been suggested.""

[artist unknown], ROBINSON CRUSOE, (ROBINSON CRUSOE # 1) - "Shipwrecked on a barren island Robinson Crusoe fought beast and savage to survive !" - A one-shot adaptating Daniel Defoe's classic novel.

[artist unknown], BATTLE OF THE BULGE, (MOVIE CLASSIC # 56) - "The Battle Of The Bulge unfolds the most heroic and intensly personal drama of men ever told during the extraordinary days of World War II." - This art is said to channel the movie poster without copying it directly.

[artist unknown], MARS AND BEYOND, (FOUR COLOR # 866) - "A science feature from Tomorrowland - Are we alone in the endless universe of space ? What will we find on Mars . . . and beyond ?" - Produced in association with the Walt Disney company.

[artist unknown], GET THE BISMARK, (COMBAT # 1) - "Throughout the vast North Atlantic steamed units of the British Fleet, alone against the powerful Axis navy. Their mission was to fulfill the command . . . 'Get The Bismark !'"

[artist unknown], THE BATTLE OF MIDWAY, (COMBAT # 10) - "The thunder of a thousand screaming bullets and bombs in . . . the blazinge Battle of Midway !"

[artist unknown], AMERICA IN ACTION, (AMERICA IN ACTION # 1) - "Latest authentic information on U.S. Armed Forces" - From 1942 from Dell

[artist unknown], COTTON WOODS, (FOUR COLOR # 837) - "Football's electric moment . . . 'The Big Game'" - More adventures for Ray Gooto's newspaper-strip sports hero, Cotton Woods

[artist unknown], OLD IRONSIDES, (FOUR COLOR # 874) - "with Johnny Tremain" - Seems to be further historical adventures for the Johnny Tremain character as developed by Walt Disney in their film with his name. I've seen it suggested that Taylor Oughton was the painter.

[artist unknown], [title unknown], (JULES VERNE'S MYSTERIOUS ISLAND # 1) - "Amazing adventures of five men . . . lost on a doomed volcanic island !" - A loose adaptation of the classic novel, different from Dell's adaptation of the Columbia film made from the book.

[artist unknown], LAD A DOG, (LAD A DOG # 2) - "Lad uncovers a sinister and brutal killer . . ." - Displayed title and reportedly indicia here does not carry any seperator after the dog's name.  This is the only dedicated issure of the comic, which is apparently new adventures for the dog hero, after Dell had adaptated the movie made from the novel by Albert Payson Terhune.

[artist unknown], FLYING FORTRESS, (MAN'S LIFE 1964-Nov) - "Double-Length Bonus! Flying Fortress--Mighty combat saga of the 'Big Butted Bird' and the men she carried to glory // The Naked Warriors (full story of the 6-man suicide squad that '...shortened WWII by at least two years.') // In Color--Annette Casir In The Flesh // Just a pain in your lower back? Prostate Trouble--Easy To Spot Sex Life Killer That Young Men Are Too Chicken To Cure // True crimes of passion--Norfolk, Virginia: Case Of The Phantom Rape"
